Choose a power supply that suits the complete system, fits the case and provides the exact connectors required. Wattage and an efficiency badge alone do not establish quality or cable compatibility.
Start with the complete system
Check the graphics-card manufacturer’s recommended power supply and the processor’s documented power behavior. Include drives, cooling and other devices. A component’s nominal TDP is not necessarily its maximum electrical demand, so adding a few headline specifications is only a planning estimate.
The builder’s power figure is a starting point, not a lab measurement. Leave appropriate margin for the configuration and check the PSU maker’s guidance. Avoid treating either the smallest possible number or the highest affordable wattage as the default answer.
Match the physical format
ATX, SFX and SFX-L describe different PSU formats. Check the case’s supported formats, maximum length and bracket requirements. Space for connectors and cable bends also matters, especially beside drive cages or a compact case’s side panel.
Use the revision-specific drawing. A familiar product name can be reused across generations with different dimensions or cable arrangements. Side-mounted connectors are a particularly important detail to check against the enclosure.

Count the connectors before buying
List the motherboard main power connection, CPU power connections, GPU power connection and SATA-powered accessories. Distinguish CPU EPS cables from PCIe GPU cables even when connectors look similar. Follow the component and PSU manuals for the required connections.
For a graphics card using a newer high-power connector or an adapter, follow its manufacturer’s instructions for full insertion, required input cables and cable clearance. Do not make up a universal bend distance: use the requirements supplied for the exact cable and card.
Keep modular cables with their approved PSU
The connector that plugs into a modular power supply is not universally wired. Reusing an old cable because its plug fits can connect the wrong pins. Use the cables supplied with the PSU or replacements that the manufacturer explicitly lists as compatible with that model.
CORSAIR’s Type-3, Type-4 and Type-5 guidance illustrates why the details matter: compatibility depends on cable type and connector, not simply the brand. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility chart rather than transferring a complete cable set based on appearance.

Evaluate quality separately from efficiency
An efficiency certification describes conversion efficiency under its test conditions. It does not replace a detailed review of voltage regulation, protection behavior, noise and sustained operation. Look for independent electrical testing of the exact model and revision where possible.
Before checkout, confirm the warranty, the included cables and what you need for a future upgrade. Save the model and revision in your parts list. Once installed, keep spare modular cables labeled with that PSU so they cannot be confused with a different unit later.
