Phone update support: a promise is not always an exact end date
The short answer

Record the policy, its starting event and the applicable model. If the start or end date is not verified, show the commitment without a made-up expiry date.

Read the policy and its anchor

Google states that Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates from first availability on the US Google Store. That starting event matters. A purchase made later does not restart the policy, and a launch year by itself is not an exact date. Our initial dataset records the policy but does not invent the missing availability-date evidence.

A fixed commitment should identify whether it covers operating-system updates, security updates or both. Avoid collapsing different promises into a single supported badge. A regional support page can also be relevant to the device you own.

Do not turn missing evidence into an expiry

For the iPhones in this initial cohort, we have not verified a fixed manufacturer end-of-support date. Their specification pages establish hardware facts but are not an exact future update schedule. The tracker shows that gap rather than assuming a number of years from previous models.

Historical support can inform a discussion, but it does not create a new guarantee for a particular phone. The same caution applies when a company changes policy for a new generation: confirm that the wording actually includes your model.

Check the device you actually own

Identify the model and region, open its settings and record the installed software version and security-patch date where available. Then check the manufacturer’s support instructions for updates. A policy window describes eligibility; it does not prove that your phone has already installed every available update.

If an update is missing, keep the carrier, region and installed version in your support request. Do not assume another owner’s screenshot describes the release available to your device. This dataset does not track rollout status or provide a current software-version feed.

Plan a longer ownership period

Support is one part of ownership. Check repair availability, battery service, application requirements and the condition of a used device separately. A promised update window is not a battery-health guarantee or an assurance that every new feature will run on older hardware.

When evaluating a purchase, prefer a written policy with a clear model scope and starting event. Recheck it before ordering. We will add verified end dates only when the source and anchor are recorded, and material changes will appear in the public data changelog.
