Start with a job and a complete system

A useful shortlist begins with the games, display and working space you already have. Write down your display resolution, desired experience and any work that shares the machine. A desktop for a living-room television has different constraints from one used beside a microphone. Decide whether you need Wi-Fi, enough front ports, a small enclosure or room for another drive. These requirements help you reject unsuitable systems before an attractive GPU name takes over the decision.

Set a total Canadian-dollar limit for the purchase. Include the computer, missing peripherals, delivery and applicable tax in separate fields. A headline amount can be a reasonable starting point, but it is not your delivered cost. Do not copy a US price into the CAD column or treat a currency conversion as a Canadian offer. A local seller, regional warranty and actual stock still need verification.

Give every candidate an exact identity

Record the retailer URL, seller name, manufacturer model and exact configuration or SKU. Keep a saved description of the CPU, graphics card, installed memory, storage and operating system. Two machines with the same family name may differ in cooling, power supply or memory arrangement. A listing that promises a component family rather than the installed model leaves an important question open. Ask the seller to identify it in writing before treating the row as complete.

For memory, record capacity and module arrangement separately. For storage, distinguish the installed drive from an empty expansion position. For networking, note whether the advertised connection is included hardware or an optional upgrade. Treat omissions as unknown fields. Unknown is a reason to investigate; it does not mean that the component is poor, free or compatible with your next upgrade.

A shortlist row should answer these questions

IdentityExact SKU and selected configurationFamily names can cover different internals.
SellerWho sells, fulfils and supports the orderA marketplace logo does not identify every responsibility.
PriceCAD amount, condition, time and exclusionsA reproducible observation can expire.

Researched examples, with the gaps visible

The following exact listings were inspected as configuration examples on October 11. They are a starting set for questions, not a ranked recommendation. No current price or stock is assigned here. The desktop comparison contains the fuller researched records, including the missing fields. Recheck the selected seller, unit and configuration before using any of these examples in a purchase decision.

The Canadian set includes three Memory Express MEPC configurations and two Best Buy Canada listings. Compare the complete system around each CPU/GPU pair rather than guessing a budget tier from those names. In particular, request the PSU, motherboard and memory arrangement where the record leaves them unknown. A named graphics-memory variant is useful identification evidence; it is not a measured result for the finished machine.

Separate the retailer from the marketplace seller

Check who actually sells the machine and who handles a damaged delivery or return. A familiar retail website can host a separate merchant. Read the terms for that merchant and selected condition, especially for open-box, refurbished or imported systems. Keep the order confirmation and the terms that applied when you paid. A general store policy is useful context, but it cannot replace the conditions attached to an exact transaction.

Best Buy Canada provides a concrete example of this distinction: its general policy gives most Best Buy-sold products a 30-day return window, while Marketplace purchases follow the seller's policy. That does not establish the policy of every Canadian retailer. Use the example as a prompt to inspect your own order, including condition requirements, exceptions, return transport and any stated costs. A warranty and a return window answer different questions.

Use reviews that match the machine

A GPU review helps explain the graphics processor; a complete-system review can reveal cooling, noise, assembly and support behaviour. Look for the tested configuration and test date. If the reviewed unit used another chassis or cooler, its noise result may not describe your candidate. If the workload or settings differ, do not paste its frame rate beside the retailer's current offer as though the exact machine produced it.

Once identity and service terms are clear, compare the candidates against your requirements. A slightly lower headline price is not automatically preferable if essential information remains absent or returning a faulty unit would be difficult for you. Explain the tradeoff in a sentence: for example, a buyer might accept a larger case for accessible service, or prefer a local return path because downtime is expensive. That is a personal decision condition, not a measured value score.

Make the final check at checkout

Reopen the chosen listing before paying. Confirm that the selected variant, seller, condition, currency and delivery destination still match your saved row. Record a fresh observation time. If the offer has expired or the configuration changed, remove it from a current shortlist until it is checked again. A research article cannot guarantee stock between your reading and checkout.

The desktop comparison and Build vs Buy tools can organize the decision when the relevant records are available. Treat a missing price or incomplete specification as a visible gap. This guide supplies a repeatable selection method; it does not name a current CAD budget winner or claim a market-wide lowest price. The final purchase should be supported by an exact offer and the terms you can actually accept.

  • Exact Canadian SKU and selected variant confirmed
  • CAD checkout costs and exclusions recorded
  • Seller, support and return route identified
  • PSU, memory arrangement and expansion questions answered
  • Offer rechecked immediately before purchase
