Buy an SSD that your system supports, with enough usable capacity for your workload. Compare game-loading and application tests; a sequential transfer-rate advantage does not translate directly into the same improvement in FPS.
Separate shape from interface
M.2 is a physical format. SATA and PCIe describe connections, while NVMe is a storage protocol used by modern PCIe SSDs. Some M.2 drives use SATA, so an M.2 connector alone does not prove that a drive and slot are compatible.
Read the motherboard’s specification for the exact slot and the SSD’s complete model number. A drive name can cover multiple capacities or heatsink versions. Check the physical length as well: M.2 2280 describes a module approximately 22 mm wide and 80 mm long.

Compare the workload, not just the box
Sequential read and write figures describe particular transfer workloads. Games also spend time processing and decompressing data. Their loading behavior varies, so a drive advertising several times the transfer rate cannot be assumed to load every game several times faster.
Look for independent tests of the games you play, with the drives tested on the same system and software version. Separate loading time, asset-streaming behavior and frame rate. They describe different parts of the experience and should not be reduced to one storage performance score.

Check capacity and write behavior
Plan for the operating system, installed games, updates and working files. Leave operating room rather than choosing a capacity that is full immediately after installation. If a budget forces a choice between extra capacity and a higher headline speed, compare how often you would actually benefit from each.
For video work or large transfers, investigate sustained write performance after the drive’s fast cache fills. Also read the endurance and warranty conditions for the capacity you intend to purchase. Ratings can differ within the same product family.

Check installation and cooling
For an M.2 drive, confirm the correct mounting position and screw or latch. Check whether the motherboard includes a heatsink and whether the SSD version you selected already has one. Do not stack heatsinks unless the manufacturer specifically supports that arrangement.
For a 2.5-inch SATA SSD, confirm a mounting position, a SATA data connection and compatible PSU power. Before installing any new drive, back up important files. Moving an operating system is a separate decision from simply adding game storage.

Choose the upgrade that solves your problem
If your current system uses a mechanical hard drive, review the SSD options supported by the machine rather than assuming it accepts an NVMe module. An older PC may need a SATA drive or another supported upgrade path.
If you already use an SSD, identify the problem first: too little space, slow large writes, or a game with specific storage requirements. Keep a working drive when it still serves the workload. Use the catalog to compare specifications, then use exact-model reviews to judge the experience those specifications produce.
