Check the CPU support list and BIOS, then verify memory, storage connections, power cables and the physical space for the exact parts. A socket match alone is not a complete compatibility check.
Start with the exact model
A part name is only the beginning of a compatibility check. Different versions of a motherboard, graphics card or case can have different dimensions and connections. Save the manufacturer product page for each exact model in your shortlist. That gives you a reliable reference when a shop listing leaves something out.
Build a list around what you actually need: your monitor, games, applications and available desk space. Include the cooler and any extra fans in the plan, even if a part picker does not check them automatically.
Check the processor and motherboard together
Matching the CPU socket is necessary, but it is not the whole check. Find the processor on the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU support list and note the minimum BIOS version. A board that supports a processor after an update may not start with that processor on older firmware.
Before ordering, ask how the board’s BIOS can be updated. Some boards can update without a working CPU installed; others need a supported processor first. Use the instructions for the exact board rather than assuming every model offers the same feature.
Confirm the RAM and storage configuration
Choose the memory generation supported by the board. DDR4 and DDR5 modules are not interchangeable. Check the supported capacity, available slots and recommended slot arrangement in the manual. A memory compatibility list is a useful place to check a tested kit.
For storage, confirm the interface and supported drive length. M.2 describes a shape, not a guarantee of NVMe support. Read the board’s storage notes too: using one connector can reduce bandwidth or disable another connector on some models.
Measure the parts that share space
Compare the exact graphics card’s length, thickness and height with the case specifications. Account for front radiators and fans, which can reduce the usable space. Leave the cable room required by the connector manufacturer. A card fitting lengthwise does not prove that its power cable will fit safely against the side panel.
Check CPU cooler height for an air cooler. For liquid cooling, verify radiator size and mounting positions, then check clearance around the motherboard and memory. The case manual is more useful here than a product photo.
Finish with power and a final review
Check the GPU maker’s power-supply recommendation alongside the requirements of the complete system. Confirm that the PSU includes the right number and type of connectors. Use only modular cables approved for that exact power supply; matching plugs do not establish electrical compatibility.
